Do the Right Thing

If you want to succeed in life, then you must make a commitment to yourself. This commitment entails that you will do whatever it takes to live out your dreams. To go after what you want and to not rest until you have conquered your goals.

I am a firm believer in doing the right thing. In most situations, we know what the right thing is. Still, we manage to make the wrong decisions. This is best illustrated using the following example: you create a plan and are ready to achieve your goals. The right thing to do is to start working and grinding it out. Yet, you find yourself procrastinating. We know what the right thing to do is, but we avoid it!

Another example will resonate with anyone in sales or in a client-facing industry. We know that one of the most vital aspects of success is to reach out to clients. Yet, how often do you postpone prospecting or calls? You always tell yourself that you can do it tomorrow, but you don’t. Yes, fear plays a role, but that’s not the point. The point is that we know what the right thing to do is! Even if we are fearful of prospecting, then we must spend our time overcoming this fear (the right thing to do) versus putting off essential work for a later date (the wrong thing to do).

When your body tells you what the right thing to do is, then you must do it. You will increase productivity and confidence in your decision making. Being indecisive and lacking initiative are two awful traits that you must eradicate!

I must stress that doing the right thing does not just apply to work. You must adopt this as your core philosophy in life that extends to your family, friends, and community. If you know that a loved one is hurting, then you must be there for them. If your community needs volunteers, then you must offer your time. Doing the right thing makes you a more wholesome individual. You will not only gain the respect of those around you, but you will boost your own self-respect.

When the time comes to do the right thing, do it! Do not hesitate. Do not reschedule. Just do the damn thing. Once you have completed the task, you will feel incredible. The longer you let it sit, the more stressful and anxious you feel.
