Boost Productivity: The 15 Minute Rule
When the going gets tough, we rush to the exits. We look for the nearest relief to take us away from hard work and a gruelling grind. This is why we procrastinate. We seek to escape reality through immediate pleasure and gratification.
The next time you feel an urge to quit working, implement the 15 Minute Rule.
The 15 Minute Rule is as simple as it gets. It requires mental toughness and personal accountability.
When you feel like quitting, force yourself to continue working for another 15 minutes. Do not give in to the sudden impulse to quit. Fight through the pain for another 15 minutes.
This is just enough time for your body to re-engage in your work. Your mind will move past its desire to procrastinate as you settle back into Mission Critical Tasks. All it takes is 15 minutes of focused work and you will shift your mindset towards productivity. Generally speaking, the 15 minutes will extend into an hour or two of productive work!
Think about that. It proves that we give up too early. Deep inside, all of us have the ability to press forward, to get the work done. Weakness is a strong opponent and unfortunately it gets the best of us. Be tougher, push through for 15 more minutes and you will be well on your way.
Now, let’s say you still want to quit after 15 minutes. From my experience, you are either focused on the wrong purpose in life, and therefore do not desire to work towards your goals, or you are overworked. If the former, you need to do some deep thinking. If the latter, you deserve a break. We’ve discussed proper breaks in the past and it’s important to avoid procrastination traps. Instead of watching TV, workout, go for a walk, or talk to a loved one for a bit. Refocus and get back to the grind.
